Know someone fascinated by nature and technology? Then, you're in the right place! Micro to Macro is a beginner-friendly workshop for 12–18-year-olds to learn about 3D scanning, electronic microscopes and create beautiful illustrative posters from nature around the Yarra Ranges Tech School campus.
Students will learn from the artist, creative-technologist, and John Monash Scholar Jess Coldrey. Jess is the first Artist in Residence at Yarra Ranges Tech School, described by The Australian newspaper as one of "Australia's brightest young people".
The students will learn to enrich their appreciation of natural beauty by finding and identifying unique shapes and colours in local plant life. These creative specimens will be analysed 200 times the natural scale and captured to create surreal biological artworks. Students will also 3D scan items using a provided iPad to consider how 3D technology can enhance and challenge our understanding of objects.
At the end of the workshop, students will have the option to create an A1 art print using their 3D scanning and microscopic images. These may be embellished, laser-cut and drawn over to create a unique artwork conveying the intricacies and wonder of nature brought alive from micro to macro size. The students can take home their work or lend it to the artist for inclusion in the Yarra Ranges Art-Tech Exhibition on July 10th. Students will receive an invitation to the exhibition opening, with the opportunity to share their projects with family and friends.
Jess is passionate about bringing technology, sustainability, and engineering together with creativity. She has exhibited art projects across Victoria exploring nature, climate change, and human responsibility. Jess has also worked in engineering on projects like the Metro Tunnel, where she enhanced project sustainability. Through her workshop series at Yarra Ranges Tech School, she hopes to make technology more fun, accessible, and creatively engaging for other young people.
