Summer Survival Kit
The 'Summer Survival Kit' series takes a playful and critical approach to consumer culture and its environmental impact. Through an ironic retro-futurism lens, the series explores the aesthetics and cultural movements of the past to shed light on our present-day relationship with material technologies. The series features collages of 1960s advertisements incorporating aluminium foil, highlighting how our exorbitant disposable culture is tied closely to our contemporary concept of 'survival'. Including a silver robot hand holding flowers, ice cream, and a glitter-shooting space gun further parodies our excessive use of single-use materials and microplastics to emphasise the disconnect between humans and their inventions.
Slyly, the series also captures the joy and nostalgia associated with summertime treats and childhood memories as a tool for reflection. Through its striking textures, bold colours, and unexpected symbolism, the 'Summer Survival Kit' series invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship with waste.
