Hands of Fate

2022

Photographic series

During Coldrey’s art residency at King’s College London, Engineering, she worked closely with robotics PhD candidate Xinqi Bao. Anime inspired Bao to become an engineer, captivating him with cybernetics and the concept of using technology to become more than our physical limitations as humans. Hands of Fate portrays Bao and one of his robots, connected by wires in a dramatic entanglement.

Dynamic and mysterious, the vibrant colours and sense of movement create an otherworldly atmosphere. To some, the grandeur and intensity of the pieces may suggest a celestial showdown. Beyond the personal, this series delves into the complex relationship between humans and technology, particularly in the realm of cybernetics, where power and control are constantly mediated between the two.
